How To Do Deep Excavation & Open Excavation For Construction Work
What Is Excavation?
Excavation is a very important part of the civil construction lines. An excavation means a man-made cavity or depression in the earth’s surface formed by earth removal.
DEEP EXCAVATION
Deep excavation in soil or hard soil more than 15 ft or 4.5 m is called deep excavation.
OPEN EXCAVATION
Open excavation means an excavation without any retaining wall system by providing suitable slope of excavation such as 1:2, when surrounding allows.
RETAINED DEEP EXCAVATION
A deep excavation in soil or rock with some retaining wall system like concreting pile, Cement Spray in soil wall, usually in populated areas.
NECESSITY OF DEEP EXCAVATION
- Deep excavation has become a necessity of better utilization of space as the population of the world increases.
- As far as mega structures like dams are concerned, deep excavation may be employed for the construction of different components like power stations.
- But the contribution of basements in the stability against overturning of high-rise buildings cannot be neglected which obviously requires deep excavation.
Earthwork Includes:
- Excavation
- Grading: Moving earth to change elevation
- Temporary shoring
- Backfill or fill: Adding earth to raise the grade
- Compaction: Increasing density
- Disposal
