What Is Excavation?

Excavation is a very important part of the civil construction lines. An excavation means a man-made cavity or depression in the earth’s surface formed by earth removal.

DEEP EXCAVATION

Deep excavation in soil or hard soil more than 15 ft or 4.5 m is called deep excavation.

OPEN EXCAVATION

Open excavation means an excavation without any retaining wall system by providing suitable slope of excavation such as 1:2, when surrounding allows.

RETAINED DEEP EXCAVATION

A deep excavation in soil or rock with some retaining wall system like concreting pile, Cement Spray in soil wall, usually in populated areas.

NECESSITY OF DEEP EXCAVATION

  •  Deep excavation has become a necessity of better utilization of space as the population of the world increases.
  • As far as mega structures like dams are concerned, deep excavation may be employed for the construction of different components like power stations.
  • But the contribution of basements in the stability against overturning of high-rise buildings cannot be neglected which obviously requires deep excavation.

Earthwork Includes:

  • Excavation
  • Grading: Moving earth to change elevation
  • Temporary shoring
  • Backfill or fill: Adding earth to raise the grade
  • Compaction: Increasing density
  • Disposal
